MTC DELIVERS DIGITAL CONNECTIVITY AT RÖSSING – ADVANCING SMART MINING IN NAMIBIA

MTC Namibia, today handed over four dedicated LTE network sites at Rössing Uranium Limited, a significant step forward in the digital transformation in Namibia’s mining sector.

The sites were deployed, at the request of Rössing mine, specifically to enhance digital connectivity in mining zones that previously had poor or no network coverage. In mining, digital connectivity is not a luxury. It is safety, efficiency, and real-time decisions on the ground.

The deployment introduces four  LTE sites across the mine, delivering enhanced mobile voice and high-speed data connectivity in key operational zones. This infrastructure is designed to support seamless, real-time communication in an environment where reliability is critical to both safety and operational efficiency.

As mining operations become increasingly complex and data-driven, the need for robust, site-specific connectivity has become essential. The private LTE network enables improved coordination between teams, faster decision-making, and the integration of modern digital tools that support smarter, more responsive operations on the ground.

Speaking at the inauguration, MTC Managing Director Dr. Licky Erastus emphasised the broader significance of the initiative:

“This project is about improving how people connect and work on the ground. It is an enabler of safer, smarter, and more efficient mining operations. By bringing reliable, high-performance communication into complex industrial environments, we are empowering teams with the tools they need to make better decisions in real time and operate with greater confidence.” Erastus added “…in the past few years, MTC has adopted a business model, through our Enterprise Business Unit, focused on delivering customized enterprise solutions tailored to the specific needs of private sector partners. Today’s milestone is a clear demonstration of that strategic approach in action.”

Johan Coetzee, RUL Managing Director,  expressed “Today we commission the newly installed and upgraded four towers on our mine…, mining is more than the heavy machinery, blasting, hauling, and long hours of physical work. We goes unseen is that mining runs on something just as critical: data. Real time, reliable, and constant data.

“Every truck we dispatch, every drill reading we analyze, every safety alert we depend on, these all rely on strong, uninterrupted communication. Without it, we are not just inconvenienced, we are exposed. Quite simply, without reliable connectivity, we are operating without full visibility.”

The partnership between MTC and Rössing Uranium reflects a shared commitment to innovation and operational excellence. For Rössing, the private LTE network forms part of its ongoing efforts to modernise infrastructure, improve productivity, and align with evolving global mining standards.

For MTC, the project reinforces its role as a strategic enabler of digital transformation across Namibia’s key economic sectors, delivering tailored connectivity solutions that address industry-specific challenges.

The inauguration brings together leadership from both organisations, along with key stakeholders and members of the media, to witness the deployment firsthand and engage on the future of connected industries in Namibia.

Beyond the immediate operational benefits, the initiative signals a broader shift towards smart mining, where connectivity, data, and automation converge to create safer workplaces, optimise performance, and unlock long-term value.

As Namibia continues to position itself within a globally competitive mining landscape, investments in digital infrastructure such as this private LTE network will play a critical role in shaping the industry’s future.
