The country is accelerating its drive toward universal electricity access, setting an ambitious national target of 70% connection by 2030 and aiming for full national access by 2040.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industries and Mines, Natangwe Ithete, highlighted this commitment last week at the inauguration of a new electrification project in Karibib in the Erongo Region.
The event saw 257 households get connected to the national grid. 133 households were electrified under the first Service Level Agreement between the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy and Erongo RED, while 124 households of households were financed by a private sector company in collaboration with Karibib Town Council.
“This inauguration of electrification speaks volumes of our commitment to implement the government’s policy of electrifying every Namibian household,” he said.
Ithete said to date, approximately 47 percent of houses are connected to the national grid, while around 12% depend on solar energy solutions.
Ithete said the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy, as a policy-making entity, remains committed to creating an enabling environment for sustainable development through targeted policies, funding support, and technical guidance.
“We continue to partner with local authorities and electricity distributors to connect homes, towns, and villages,” he concluded.
